The One Thing Most People Skip — Until It’s Too Late
Every week, someone walks into Mobile Lizard in Baltimore a little stressed. Their screen is cracked, their phone won’t charge, or they dropped it and something isn’t right. And the first thing we ask is: are you backed up?
Most of the time, the answer is some version of “I think so” — which usually means no.
Here’s the thing: we take data protection seriously here. Most repairs go smoothly and your data stays exactly where it was. But screens can fail during replacement, water damage can be unpredictable, and if a repair is more involved than expected, the safest place for your photos, contacts, and messages is a backup that already exists. If you’re coming in from Locust Point or anywhere in South Baltimore, taking 15 minutes to back up before you visit could save you a world of stress.
Why It Matters More Than You Think
Your phone holds more of your life than you might realize. Years of photos, your entire contacts list, saved passwords, notes, banking apps, and text threads you’d never be able to piece back together. A backup keeps all of that safe — no matter what happens to the hardware.
The good news: it’s free, fast, and you don’t need to be tech-savvy to do it.
How to Back Up an iPhone
Using iCloud (Easiest)
Go to Settings, tap your name at the top, then iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Make sure you’re on Wi-Fi and keep your phone plugged in until it finishes. Apple gives you 5GB of iCloud storage free — if you’re running low, a small monthly upgrade buys you more room.
Using a Computer (Most Complete)
Plug your iPhone into a Mac or PC with a USB cable. On a Mac, open Finder and click your device in the sidebar. On a PC, open iTunes. Hit Back Up Now. This saves absolutely everything locally and doesn’t use any iCloud space. If you’re planning to bring your phone in for iPhone repair in Baltimore, this is the most thorough option — do it the night before.
How to Back Up a Samsung or Android Phone
Google Backup
Head to Settings > System > Backup, switch on Back Up to Google Drive, and tap Back Up Now. This covers your contacts, texts, call history, app data, and device settings automatically going forward.
Samsung Cloud (Samsung Galaxy Users)
Open Settings > Accounts and Backup > Back Up Data and run a Samsung Cloud backup. This captures your gallery, Samsung-specific settings, and contacts — a useful second layer before any Samsung repair in Baltimore. We recommend doing both.
A Few Things That Don’t Back Up Automatically
Some apps — especially banking apps, authenticator apps, and certain messaging platforms — don’t include their data in standard backups. If you use WhatsApp, you’ll want to back up your chat history separately inside the app itself under Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Same goes for any two-factor authentication app like Google Authenticator — note your codes before switching devices.
