Do These Things Right Now
It Happens More Than Anyone Admits. Here’s What to Do.
Phone-in-toilet incidents are among the most common water damage situations we see at Mobile Lizard in Baltimore. The combination of “phone in back pocket” and “sitting down” is a perfect storm. Whatever the specific story, the steps are the same and the speed with which you take them matters.
Do This Immediately
1. Get it out fast and power it off. Every second in the water matters. The moment it’s out of the water, hold the power button and shut it completely off. Do not unlock it, do not check if it still works, do not take a screenshot. Power off immediately.
2. Don’t charge it. Keep it off the charger until it’s been assessed by a technician.
3. Remove the case, SIM tray, and any accessories. This allows air circulation and removes components that trap moisture against the port.
Following these immediate actions can significantly improve the chances of salvaging your device. Allow it to air dry in a well-ventilated area, avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources, which may cause further damage. It is advisable to wait at least 48 hours before considering turning it on or seeking professional evaluation. Remember, prompt and careful handling is essential in mitigating water damage.
Skip the Rice
As we’ve written in our Water Damage guide, rice does essentially nothing to dry the inside of a smartphone. The time you spend waiting for rice to “work” is time corrosion is developing on your logic board. It’s one of the most persistent myths in consumer tech and it causes real harm by delaying appropriate action.
Come In As Soon As Possible
This is the most important step. At Mobile Lizard in Baltimore, we offer free diagnostics on water-damaged devices. We’ll open the phone, show you the internal condition and you’ll see exactly what we’re seeing. We will tell you what we recommend before any repair begins.
The good news: phones that get professional attention quickly after water exposure have a much higher success rate than those that sit for days. Corrosion is a time-dependent process. Speed genuinely matters.
Even if the phone seems fine after drying “it turns on and works!” the minerals left behind by the water are still there, slowly forming corrosive deposits. Bring it in anyway.
Toilet Water Specifically
It’s worth noting that toilet water is generally higher in mineral content and bacteria than, say, rainwater. This doesn’t change the repair process, but it does mean thorough cleaning is especially important. We handle this routinely and professionally.
