Cracked Phone Screen or Cracked Screen Protector?

Here’s How to Tell If your Phone screen is cracked or its Just the screen protector

It Happens to Almost Everyone

Your phone takes a tumble, you pick it up, and your heart sinks. There’s a crack. But wait — is that the screen, or is it the screen protector? If you have a glass protector on, the answer actually matters quite a bit. One means you need a $15 replacement. The other might mean a repair visit.

Here’s how to tell the difference, quickly and without stressing.

Step One: Look at the Edges

Pick up your phone and look at where the crack meets the edge of the screen. A crack in the tempered glass protector typically stops at the edge of the protector itself — you’ll often be able to see a slight separation or lifting at the border if you look closely. A crack in the actual screen tends to go further, potentially wrapping toward the edge of the phone’s frame.

Step Two: Touch the Surface

Run your fingernail gently along the crack. If it catches slightly on a separate layer above the glass — meaning you can feel that the crack is in something sitting on top of the screen — that’s your protector. If the surface feels like one continuous piece of glass, and the crack is in it, that’s your actual screen.

Step Three: Check Touch Response

A cracked screen protector almost never affects how your touchscreen works. If your phone is responding normally to every tap — no dead zones, no unresponsive areas — the protector is a much more likely culprit. If parts of the screen aren’t registering your touch, or the display itself looks strange (discoloration, dark spots, lines), the screen is likely involved.

Step Four: Look for Discoloration Under the Crack

Hold your phone up to the light and look at the crack from different angles. Protector cracks look white and stay on the surface. An actual screen crack may show dark or rainbow-colored spreading beneath it, which is the LCD or OLED layer being affected. If you see ink-like blotching or a dark shadow spreading from the crack, that’s screen damage.

If It’s the Protector: Great News

Peel it off carefully (a business card or guitar pick at the corner works well), and your screen underneath should be completely unharmed. Clean the screen gently and replace the protector. That’s it.

If It’s the Screen: Here’s What to Do

Don’t wait on it. A cracked screen lets in moisture and dust, and the damage tends to spread — especially if there are any dark spots forming. The sooner you get it fixed, the less likely you are to develop additional issues.
