First: Don’t Put It in Rice.

Baltimore, we say this with genuine kindness — the rice trick is largely a myth, and in the time it takes to not work, the corrosion inside your phone is getting worse. If your phone has taken a significant water exposure, the best thing you can do is power it off immediately and bring it in as soon as possible.

Here’s everything you need to know about water damage and what’s actually repairable.

What Happens When Water Gets Inside Your Phone

Modern phones have water resistance ratings, but “water resistant” is not the same as “waterproof.” The seals that keep water out degrade over time, especially on phones that have been dropped, whose cases have been removed and replaced, or that are more than a year or two old. A splash might be fine — a full submersion, even on a rated device, might not be. Your phone has openings at the top so you can hear, and at the bottom to allow for the speakerphone and the charging port. Most liquid damage we see comes in through these openings, and if the back of your phone is broken, it will allow water in as well.

When water gets inside, it doesn’t damage things instantly. The real problem is what happens next: as the water evaporates, it leaves behind mineral deposits that create conductive pathways across circuit board contacts. This causes short circuits, corrosion, and component failure — sometimes days, weeks or months after the initial exposure.

This is why “it seemed fine for a week and then stopped working” is a story we hear often.

What We Do Differently — Free Diagnostics, No Surprises

At Mobile Lizard Phone Repait in Baltimore, we offer free diagnostics on water-damaged devices. We open the phone, assess the extent of the damage, and — importantly — we show you what we’re looking at before we do anything. You’ll see exactly what’s inside and what we’re recommending and why. No surprise charges, no guessing.

What we’re looking for: corrosion on the logic board and connectors, damage to the battery, and whether the display has been affected by moisture exposure.

What’s Usually Fixable

Light moisture exposure caught early: If you get to us quickly after water contact, professional cleaning of the logic board — using isopropyl alcohol and specialized tools — can often remove mineral deposits before they cause lasting damage. This is the scenario where speed matters most.

Damaged components: Sometimes the screen, battery, or charging port absorbs water damage and needs to be replaced even if the main board is clean. These are all standard repairs.

Data recovery: Even on a phone that won’t power on due to water damage, data recovery is sometimes possible. We’ve helped customers retrieve photos and contacts from phones that another repair shop had given up on. It’s worth asking — one customer told us: “MobileLizard fixed my phone even though another repair shop told me there was nothing they could do.”

What May Not Be Fixable

Severe or prolonged water exposure — phones left in water for extended periods, or phones that sat wet for days before being brought in — can cause corrosion damage that’s too widespread to fully address. We’ll be honest with you about that assessment, and if we can’t fix the device itself, we’ll do our best to recover your data.

What to Do Right Now If It Just Happened

Power it off immediately. Don’t try to turn it on to see if it works.

Don’t charge it — water and electricity in the same circuit is how things get worse fast.

Skip the rice. It does very little.

Remove the case and SIM card tray if you can.

Bring it in. The sooner, the better — every hour matters with corrosion.

Curious About Cost? We’ll Know More Once We Look.

Because water damage varies so much, we can’t quote a single price — but our diagnostic is free, and we’ll give you a full breakdown before any work begins.
